SolFest and Sustainablity

Press Release: This Friday outside Reynolds from 4pm-7pm, you will notice a lot of activity. This is because the Campus Activities Board, in conjunction with the Green Tower, will be hosting SolFest – a celebration to cap off Earth Week here on campus.

Recently, Babson signed a contract with ECS (Energy Climate Solutions,) to help the campus become more sustainable. For now, their office on campus is in the Green Exchange Store in Reynolds Campus Center. Green Tower, with the help of ECS, will develop a sustainable event planning guide to be used for future event planning on campus. SolFest will be the model event for this guide.

Many steps were taken in the planning of SolFest to make it as sustainable as possible. Logistically, the event will have many more recycling cans than usual events to promote recycling. There will also be local and organic food provided by Sodexo served in Greenware. Also, all the artists performing are local artists. Opening will be Naia Kete of Shutesbury, MA (http://www.myspace.com/naiakete). The main performance will be by Jamie Kent of Northampton, MA and his band (http://www.myspace.com/jamiekentmusic). Jamie is also a graduate of Babson belonging to the class of 2009. Closing the show will be an up and coming DJ by the name Bastian D of Boston, MA (http://theinfiniteplayground.blogspot.com/).

In terms of activities, there will be a giant Twister competition, a limbo competition as well as tie-dyeing. For the tie-dyeing, there will be 100% organic cotton t-shirts!

Now to the most important part of any event at Babson: the freebies! There will be a few hundred stylish stainless steel reusable water bottles for those who commit to and sign the sustainable living pledge. There will also be recycled Frisbees up for grabs. And for the 21+ there will be free beer garden featuring Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale and Harpoon UFO.

While the goal of SolFest is to promote a sustainable way of living, it will be undoubtedly be a great party. After all, SolFest is all about having fun in the sun!

So, here’s what you need to remember. Friday, April 23rd from 4PM-7 PM outside Reynolds. FREE food, FREE music, and FREE stuff. Hope to see you there!
